Gonzalo León is Emeritus Professor of Telematics Engineering at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, Vice-president of the Foundation “Circle of Technologies for Defence and Security” and Member of the Executive Committee of the “Forum of Innovative Companies” (FEI). He is corresponding academics of the Royal Academy of Doctors of Spain (RADE) and of the Academy of Military Sciences and Arts (ACAMI).

At the UPM he was Vice-rector for Research (2004-2014), Deputy Rector for Innovation (2014-2020), Director of the Centre for Support to Technological Innovation (2014-2020) and Rector's Delegate for Institutional Relations in Defence (2021-2024). He was chair of several WGs of the European Commission and G7 rapporteur for research infrastructures.

In the Spanish Government, he was Secretary General of Scientific Policy (2002-2004), Deputy Director General of International Relations in R&D (1996-1998), Deputy Director of the Office of Science and Technology of the Spanish Government (1998-2000), President of the Advisory Committee on Large Scientific Facilities (2000-2002), advisor at the General Secretariat for Research (2006-2020), Spanish representative of the Strategic Forum for International Cooperation (2010-2022) and in the 5+5 Dialogue on research, innovation and higher education (2016-2022).
